Barbara Freethy, M.ED.



Barbara B. Freethy, M.Ed., is a psychotherapist/educational therapist at Touchstone Psychotherapy Associates in Portland, Maine, where she has been in private practice for the past 10 years. She specializes in working with children and adults with social/cognitive diversity, most particularly, with explosive noncompliant behavior and social thinking disorders. This includes individual, group and parent training related to ADD/ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Sensory Integration Issues, Nonverbal Learning Disabilities, Learning Differences and Gifted Children with Special Needs.

Barbara earned a B.A. in Psychology from George Washington University and a M.Ed. in Early Intervention/Special Education from Rhode Island College. In the early 1970’s, she was a classroom teacher in Fairfax County, VA, in a self-contained school for children with significant special needs.  Barbara moved to Providence in 1975 where she was the director of The Trudeau Center Early Intervention Program, part of a multidisciplinary project with Meeting Street School and Rhode Island Hospital.

From 1980-1998, Barbara worked for the Child Development Services system in Maine providing comprehensive developmental evaluations of children ages birth to five.  She coordinated interdisciplinary “arena” evaluation teams in Rockland and Brunswick, Maine. Barbara has given many trainings of the use the Mullen Scales of Early Learning (MSEL), a standardized assessment designed to evaluate learning abilities in young children.

Barbara has completed both Level I and Level II advanced training with Ross Greene, Ph.D., in the Collaborative Problem Solving Approach in Cambridge, MA.  She uses this model in her work with children and families in addition to providing training and supervision to other professionals and parents on a regular basis.

In January, 2006, Barbara took part in the mentorship program with Michelle Garcia Winner, CCC-SLP, at the Social Thinking Center in San Jose, CA. She currently facilitates 8 weekly social thinking groups for children ages 6-12, and 1 weekly group for adults in her private practice. 

Barbara specializes in Social Cognitive Evaluations and is currently integrating the Collaborative Problem Solving Approach in her social thinking groups.  She presented on this topic at the First Annual Social Thinking Providers Conference in Santa Clara, CA, on June 21-22, 2008.

Barbara also provides Origami Social Thinking Groups. These groups are based on the "Theragami" model developed by Hagit Shalev which focuses on  using paper folding technique as an educational, therapeutic and social tool to enhance vital skills in children.

Barbara has been bringing renowned speakers to Maine for the past 12 years through her business, Transdisciplinary Workshops, Inc. She has organized over 80 continuing education workshops. In addition, Barbara has presented numerous lectures and trainings in the New England area on topics related to her work.
